PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which includes a protective layer with high mechanical strength and a high lubricant adhesion ratio and has excellent durability and to provide an efficient manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer, the protective layer and a lubricant layer on a substrate in this order from the substrate side, the protective layer has a first protective layer composed of diamond-like carbon and a second protective layer containing a silicon-containing compound in this order from the substrate side. The manufacturing method for the magnetic recording medium includes at least a magnetic layer forming step for forming the magnetic layer on the substrate, a protective layer forming step for forming the protective layer on the magnetic layer and a lubricant layer forming step for forming the lubricant layer on the protective layer, wherein the protective layer forming step includes forming a second protective layer containing the silicon-containing compound on the first protective layer after forming the first protective layer composed of the diamond-like carbon on the magnetic layer and wherein the first protective layer is formed by a filtered cathodic arc method.
