<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier capable of reducing a heat generation and a consumption power. <P>SOLUTION: An optical amplifier has an excitation light source outputting an excitation light, an input section inputting a signal light, an optical amplifying medium amplifying the signal light input to the input section by the energy of the excitation light, and an optical multiplexing means multiplexing the excitation light to the optical amplifying medium. An optical branching means has an input port and a plurality of output ports, inputs an amplifying signal light output from the optical amplifier to the input port, and branches and outputs the amplifying signal light to a plurality of the output ports. An optical output detecting means is connected to either output port side of the optical branching means, detects the intensity of the signal light output from the output ports, and outputs a detecting signal corresponding to the intensity. A control unit receives the detecting signal output from the optical output detecting means, and controls the intensity of the excitation light output from the excitation light source so that the intensity of the signal light detected by the optical output detecting means reaches a fixed value. The optical amplifier has such an optical amplifier and such an optical branching means.
