PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating a chromium-containing steel slag, by which chromium contained in the slag is fixed in a trivalent state, when a large amount of the slag is produced at melting of chromium-containing steel. SOLUTION: The slag generated at melting of the chromium-containing steel in an electric furnace is treated such that the basicity of the slag is adjusted to 0.7≤CaO/SiO<SB>2</SB>≤1.2 to accelerate slagging of free unslagged CaO to achieve a trivalent chromium oxide Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>concentration of 3-5 wt.%. Then, the chromium-containing molten steel is slagged-off into a vessel having a ratio (S/Vm<SP>-1</SP>) of interfacial surface area (Sm<SP>2</SP>) to volume (Vm<SP>3</SP>) of the slag controlled to≤4, which represents the area of the slag exposed to the atmosphere after slag-off.
