PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress exhaust smoke at engine start, and to start certainly an engine in a short period of time after the engine has been cranked up. SOLUTION: Except when the present rateαof an increase in engine revolution speed has reached a target rateαp of an increase in engine revolution speed, a fuel injection quantity Q is gradually increased. When the present rateαof the increase in engine revolution has reached the target rateαp of the increase in engine revolution, the fuel injection quantity Q is gradually decreased.
