According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for converting a M eteorological Aerodrome Report (METAR) formatted message to a Joint Variable Message Format (JVMF) formatted message comprises receiving a METAR formatt ed message and converting the METAR formatted message to a JVMF formatted me ssage. The METAR formatted message and the JVMF formatted messages are both adapted to include weather related information.
