Oxypentafluorosulfate compositions and processes for making them

A molecular compound represented by the formula ZOSF<Sub>5</Sub>, is prepared by combining a reagent represented by the formula Y<Sup>+ -</Sup>OSF<Sub>5</Sub> with a substrate represented by the formula ZL, where L is a leaving group, in an organic solvent. Y is either an inorganic cation, in which case a complexing agent is also present, or an organic cation. Z is C<Sub>1-20</Sub> alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, combinations thereof, or analogues thereof containing at least one heteroatom. Novel compounds ZOSF<Sub>5</Sub> as can be made using such a process, and novel reactants Y<Sup>+ -</Sup>OSF<Sub>5</Sub> used in such a process as well as processes of making the same, are also described.
