A benzothiophene derivative that having novel structure and an electroluminescence device which comprises a cathode, an anode and an organic thin film layer which comprises at least one layer comprising at least a light emitting layer and is disposed between the cathode and the anode, wherein at least one layer in the organic thin film layer comprises the benzothiophene derivative described in Claim 1 singly or as a component of a mixture. An electroluminescence device emitting blue light, exhibiting a great efficiency of light emission and having a long life can be obtained by using the derivative.
