An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) element and a projection type LCD are provided to reduce the quantity of ion impurities in liquid crystal cells to prevent the generation of burn-in and achieve high picture quality. A projection type LCD includes a light source, an LCD, a light concentrating optical system and a projection optical system. The light concentrating optical system guides light emitted from the light source to the LCD. The projection optical system magnifies optically modulated light and projects the magnified light to the LCD. The LCD includes a liquid crystal layer(16) interposed between a pair of substrates(11,12) bonded to each other using a sealant(15). The dielectric anisotropy of the material of the liquid crystal layer is in the range of minus 4.5 to 0 at a temperature of 70 degrees centigrade.
