Grinding apparatus comprises a support body 8 on which are mounted a grinding wheel 14 and a rotatable tool turret, a workholder 4 and means for rotating the workholder 4 about an axis, although figure 1 shows a second grinding wheel rather than a tool turret. The grinding wheel 14 and tool turret can be selectively positioned adjacent a workpiece by rotating the support body 8 relative to a base 16 about an axis perpendicular to the workholder rotation axis. Rotation of the support body 8 is by means of a direct drive motor where a rotor (30, fig. 2) is carried by the support body 8 and a stator (26, fig. 2) mounted on the base. The support body 8 is supported during rotation by means of at least one hydrostatic thrust bearing (32 and 34, fig. 2) and may be anchored to the base by means of a flange (40, fig. 2) which is gripped by a clamp (50 and 52, fig. 2) on the base. A workpiece may be ground by rotating the support body while the grinding wheel 14 is in contact with the workpiece.
