The unit (26) has a group of helical guide rails (56) that are moved opposite to a cover unit (54) between an active position, in which the rails are provided below the cover unit in engagement with crop, and an inactive position, in which the rails are provided above the cover unit. Another group of guide rails (56`) are moved alternatively with the former group of rails opposite to the unit between the active and inactive positions. The latter group of rails has an inclination that is different from the inclination of the rails of the former group.
