A safety apparatus for use on a motor vehicle, the apparatus comprising a bumper (2) or a fender and a mounting arrangement (4, 6) for mounting the bumper or fender to to the motor vehicle, wherein the mounting arrangement comprises at least one extensible element which is operable to move the bumper or fender away from the body of the vehicle in response to a signal from a computer, which senses a possible accident. The arrangement will absorb energy as the bumper moves back towards the body of the vehicle during an impact. The extensible elements may comprise gas operated piston and cylinder arrangements (figure 4). The computer receives a signal from a forward facing sensor measuring the speed of the vehicle and the distance to an object, and receives a further signal from a sensor following the direction of the front wheels. |
