A backlight unit is provided to focus lights inputted from a light guide plate through prism mountains which are formed on a surface of a prism sheet for reducing optical insertion loss, thereby improving light efficiency. A backlight unit comprises a light guide plate, and a prism sheet(260). The light guide plate guides the inputted light through inner reflection between upper and lower surfaces. Prism patterns(264), which have superposed X patterns, are installed on the prism sheet which focuses the lights inputted from the light guide plate. The prism patterns include first prism mountains(266) and second prism mountains(268). The first prism mountains are formed on the surface of the prism sheet to focus the lights. The second prism mountains are crossed with the first prism mountains to focus the light. A diffusion plate is placed between the light guide plate and the prism sheet to diffuse the inputted light.
