[Also in Group XXIII] A machine for tamping the ballast of railway tracks carries two series of mechanical hammers 29, 30 the angular positions of which can be changed by alteration of the positions of the screwed members 46, 47 on screws 13 ; and the vertical positions of which can be adjusted by a cable 55 (56) carried by winches in casing 200, and operable in concert with, or independently from, the screws. 13 An auxiliary track 22, at right angles to the permanent way, can be laid on the way and the machine can be run onto a track clear of the way by means of rollers 28 to permit the passage of a train.
