An active brake for a spindle motor is provided to decelerate or break a motor rapidly by activating a complementary excitation signal to the sequence from each normal commutation status of a forward status machine. An active brake for a spindle motor comprises a motor control circuit, at least one logic circuit, and a commutation logic circuit(110). The motor control circuit generates a complementary excitation signal for each base excitation signal from the sequence of commutation status. The logic circuit receives the base excitation signal component of the base excitation signal and an active breaking signal(120). The logic circuit outputs the complementary excitation signal component having the base excitation signal component to a motor when the active breaking signal is applied. The commutation logic circuit receives the sequence of the base excitation signals and applies the complementary excitation signal of the base excitation signal to a phased motor(102) in each commutation status. The commutation logic circuit also applies the base excitation signal corresponding to each commutation status to rotate the phased motor when the active breaking signal does not exist, and applies the complementary excitation signal of the base excitation signal corresponding to each commutation status to decelerate the phased motor when the active breaking signal exists.
