The device has a transfer table containing a transport carriage (03) and a transport rail on it for a roll conveyor, whereby to transfer the material roll (08) to the roll changer (01) the transfer table (02) is arranged with the roll conveyor (07) to be movable to between two supporting journals. The transport rail (06) is arranged to adopt at least two different transfer positions in at least two different horizontal angular positions on the transport carriage for moving the roll conveyor in and out. An independent claim is also included for a method of transporting a roll of material.
