A media device and a method for displaying a mode icon according to mode selection are provided to recognize a mode executed in a media device having various functions by displaying the mode icon of the executed mode relationally according to the mode selection. A display information generator(160) displays or overlaps display information on an image to be displayed on a display part(180). A controller(190) enables the display information generator to display a mode icon displayed in a mode selection screen, which is used for selecting a mode, on a mode execution screen when the mode is executed. The controller enables the display information generator to change the mode icon into a lower mode icon including characteristics of a lower mode in a shape of the mode icon when the lower mode is selected during mode execution. The shape of a lower mode icon is identical with the shape of the mode icon and the characteristics of the lower icon are represented in the shape of the lower mode icon.
