The memory card reader (1) has a housing (2) in which a printed board (5) and a receiving device for the memory card for realizing the function of the reader is provided. A covered groove (3) for inserting the memory card and an opening (4) for realizing an optical passage is provided in the housing comprising two parts. The reader is connected with an electronic device for data exchange. A light emitting diode (LED) (6) is provided on the printed board such that the LED protrudes in the opening and has no separate cover and closes nearly flush with the outer contour of the housing.
