A method and a system for providing an extended bandwidth to an audio signal are provided not to generate a spectrum gap even when a received signal includes very narrow frequency range. An audio signal such as a voice signal is received via a telephone line(201). A signal vector is generated from the signal(202). A windowing procedure is performed on the signal vector to obtain a windowed signal vector(203). A long-term power spectrum of the received audio signal is determined based on a spectrum vector(204). The signal is equalized on the determined spectrum vector(205). A codebook entry is adapted(206). A broadband spectrum envelope is determined(207). An excitation signal corresponding to the received audio signal is generated(208). The excitation signal is used to perform spectrally coloring(209). A current bandwidth limit is adapted(210). An output signal having a standard bandwidth is generated(211).
