<p>Pharmaceutical composition comprising a homeodomain-interacting kinase 4 (HipK4) nucleic acid, a HipK4 polypeptide, a HipK4 modulator, an anti-HipK4 antibody, a HipK4 antisense molecule or a HipK4 interfering RNA molecule is used for diagnosis and treatment of fertility disorders and for contraception. Pharmaceutical composition comprising a homeodomain-interacting kinase 4 (HipK4) nucleic acid corresponding to SEQ ID NO:1 (a defined sequence of 2451 nucleotides given in the specification), a HipK4 polypeptide corresponding to SEQ ID NO:2 (a defined sequence of 616 amino acids given in the specification), a HipK4 modulator, an anti-HipK4 antibody, a HipK4 antisense molecule or a HipK4 interfering RNA molecule is used for diagnosis and treatment of fertility disorders and for contraception. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of a pharmaceutical composition as above containing a HipK4 nucleic acid, polypeptide or antisense molecule as a target substance for producing an agent for treating diseases causally connected with the HipK4 gene and/or protein; (2) producing a polypeptide as above by culturing a host cell under conditions permitting DNA expression whereby the expression product can be isolated from the culture; (3) use of a polypeptide as above to isolated and produce specific ligands; (4) test system for identifying effectors of a HipK4 polypeptide by incubating the polypeptide with a modulator and measuring binding of a molecule to the polypeptide, where HipK4 is incubated with radiolabeled ATP and the substrate MBP (not defined) and determining the degree of phosphorylation of the substrate; (5) preparing a pharmaceutical agent by contacting substances with a test system as above, comparing the effect of the substance on the test system with controls, identifying a substance that modulates the activity of the HipK4 polypeptide, and mixing the substance with formulating materials; (6) use of a DNA chip according to the invention (no details given) for diagnosis of fertility disorders.
