An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to make refrigerant bypass an indoor heat exchanger but flow to an outdoor heat exchanger only for defrosting the outdoor heat exchanger in a defrosting mode at the same time as heating a room space by a heater. An air conditioner includes compressors(26,27), indoor/outdoor heat exchangers(10,20) for condensing or evaporating refrigerant compressed by the compressor, and an expansion unit(50) for expanding the refrigerant condensed by the indoor or outdoor heat exchanger. A refrigerant flow converting unit(60) makes the refrigerant flow through the outdoor heat exchanger, the indoor heat exchanger, the compressors and the expansion unit, or makes the refrigerant compressed by the compressors bypass at least one of the indoor heat exchanger and the expansion unit. The refrigerant flow converting unit has a first refrigerant flow conversion part(62) for making the compressed refrigerant flow from the compressors to the indoor heat exchanger or the outdoor heat exchanger, and a second refrigerant flow conversion part(64) for connecting or disconnecting the indoor heat exchanger to or from the outdoor heat exchanger and the compressor. A heater(18) is mounted together with the indoor heat exchanger.
