The method involves transferring the internal-combustion engine, in a process step and maintaining a momentary operating mode in a predetermined operating point that is characterized by two operating parameters comprising the load and the speed. The internal-combustion engine is transferred into another operating mode in another process step that is characteristic diagram-controlled such that for N successive operating cycles two control variables for the operation of the internal-combustion engine are picked out sequentially from a set of N characteristic diagrams. An independent claim is also included for a hybrid internal-combustion engine with a cylinder.
