Cation exchange resins containing active phosphoric acid groups are made by condensing a mono- or di-aryl phosphate, which is free from substitution in at least 2 reactive positions in the aromatic nucleus, with an aldehyde. In examples: (1) mono-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphate (see Group IV (b)) and formaldehyde in aqueous solution were condensed in vacuo at, e.g. 50 DEG C. and the viscous product was hardened at 80 DEG to 90 DEG C. under mormal pressure. The resulting deep red translucent hard resin was then neutralized with ammonia or caustic soda, washed and dried; resins were similarly made by reacting (2) mono - (m - hydroxyphenyl) - phosphate, and (3) mono - dihydroxyphenyl phosphate with formaldehyde, and subsequently hardening, washing and drying the products. Other phosphates specified are mono-(2-hydroxynaphthalene) - 3 - phosphate, mono - (2-hydroxy - diphenyl) - 21 - phosphate, mono-(4 - chloro - 3 - hydroxyphenyl) - 1 - phosphate and mono - (4 - carboxy - 2 - hydroxyphenyl)-1-phosphate.ALSO:Mono- and di-aryl phosphates, free from substitution in at least 2 reactive positions in the aromatic nucleus, are made from mono- or poly-hydroxy aromatic compounds. In exexamples: (1) 1 mol. of phosphorus pentoxide and 2.5 mols. of pyrocatechin are heated, the resulting phenylene cylophosphoric acid is hydrolysed by heating with water, subsequent evaporation in vacuo yielding crystalline mono-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphate; in a similar manner phosphorus pentoxide is reacted with (2) resorcinol to form mono-(m-hydroxyphenylphenyl)-phosphate, and (3) pyrogallal to form mono - di - hydroxyphenyl phosphate. Other phosphates specified are mono-(2-hydroxynaphthalene)-3-phosphate, mono-(2-hydroxydiphenyl)-21-phosphate, mono-(4 - chloro - 3 - hydroxyphenyl) - 1 - phosphate and mono - (4 - carboxy-2-hydroxyphenyl)-1-phosphate. |
