Aluminium trialkyls are prepared by decomposing a complex metal alkyl of aluminium and an alkali metal at elevated temperature and substantially in the absence of moisture and oxygen in the presence of a Friedel-Craft catalyst as defined. The catalyst should not cause undesired decomposition reactions. Suitable catalysts are aluminium halides, aluminium alkyl halides, zinc chloride and ferric chloride. The reaction may be carried out under reduced pressure so that the aluminium trialkyl distils off as it is formed. An inert solvent e.g. decalin or other paraffinic or alicyclic hydrocarbon may be used as reaction medium. If desired the decomposition may be carried out on the complex alkali-metal aluminium alkyl prepared according to Specification 757,524 without isolation from the reaction mixture. In an example lithium aluminium tetrapropyl is heated at 200 DEG C. at reduced pressure in the presence of aluminium chloride, aluminium tripropyl distilling from the reaction vessel. The Provisional Specification refers also to the application of the process to the production of tri-alkyls of boron, gallium, indium and thallium.
