An apparatus and a method for processing images are provided to shorten the processing time and improve the efficiency of a memory unit in consecutively processing the image data of plural frames. An image processing apparatus comprises various function macros to process the image data of frames composed of a plurality of pixels. Among the various function macros, the first function macro(23) performs preceding image processing for the image data and tentatively stores the image-processed data in a specific area of a memory unit. The second function macro(24) reads the image-processed data tentatively stored in the memory unit and performs succeeding image processing. The first and second function macros(23,24) respectively comprise monitoring circuits(31,36) which mutually monitor the other function macro's processing state. The first monitoring circuit(31) monitors the frames being processed in the second function macro(24) and the number of data lines in processing the image data of the frames. The second monitoring circuit(36) monitors the frames being processed in the first function macro(23) and the number of data lines in processing the image data of the frames.
