The method involves igniting an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle by an ignition operation, and monitoring effective production of combustion of the ignited mixture by a calculating unit e.g. microcontroller. An ignition installation is utilized with a laser installation for transmitting a laser pulse in the combustion chamber of the engine. The laser pulse is transmitted in the chamber in case of absence of combustion, after the ignition operation. An independent claim is also included for a computer program for implementing a method of controlling an internal combustion engine.
