A pharmaceutical composition is provided to be able to promote apoptosis by increasing the sensitivity on a cytotoxic chemical of activated astrocytes, thereby capable of preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases induced by the excessive activation of the astrocytes. A composition for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease, Huntington's disease and Multiple Sclerosis comprises a lipocalin 2 protein or a nucleic acid coding the same. The composition further comprises a cytotoxic chemical such as Azathiopine, Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, methotrexate, cytarabine, and datinomycin.
