A navigation system is provided to help a user designate a destination by providing feature information on a point of interest. A navigation system comprises a spot-site database, a spot-feature database, an acquiring unit, a retrieving unit, a designating unit, and an information providing unit. The spot-site database stores position information of each of spots including at least one of a locational point and a facility on a map. The spot-feature database stores feature information with respect to the spots. The feature information allows a user to perceive a feature of each spot. The acquiring unit obtains a retrieval condition to retrieve a spot from the user. The retrieving unit retrieves a spot meeting the retrieval condition from the spot-site database. The designating unit designates feature information on the retrieved spot. The information providing unit is configured to provide the designated feature information as initial information with respect to the retrieved spot. In the navigation system, a current position is designated as a center of a start-point area. A category of a spot, which is a point of interest, is designated. Feature information on a spot within the start-point area is shown on a display device as initial information, so that the user can perceive the feature of the spot easily.
