PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radical polymerization initiator having high sensitivity to energy rays, especially the light within a wave length region of from 250 to 450 nm even without using a sensitizer, and effectively usable for various kinds of applications utilizing a polymerization reaction, a crosslinking reaction or the like catalyzed by a radical. SOLUTION: The radical polymerization initiator is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a substituent; R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each a hydrogen atom or a substituent; X is a divalent aromatic ring-condensed group; and Ar<SP>1</SP>is an aryl group or a heterocyclic group).
