LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND METHOD OF ADJUSTING BRIGHTNESS FOR THE SAME

An LCD and a method for adjusting the brightness thereof are provided to adjust representative values to be applied for adjusting brightness of portion areas of a backlight unit and gamma-correct an inputted image, thereby efficiently improving the contrast ratio. A backlight part(300) includes a light emitting unit divided into a predetermined number of portion areas, wherein the brightness of each of the portion areas is individually adjusted. A display part(400) includes an LCD panel and a driving unit. A control part(200) calculates representative values for adjusting the brightness of the portion areas in response to an inputted image signal to output the calculated representative values to the backlight part. The control part gamma-corrects the inputted image signal to compensate for the increase and decrease in brightness of each of the portion areas due to difference in brightness between adjacent portion areas, and outputs the gamma-corrected image signal to the display part.
