PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF TRANS-2,2-DIMETHYL- 3-FORMYLCYCLOPROPANE CARBOXYLIC ACID ESTER

A process for producing a trans-2,2-dimethyl-3- formylcyclopropane carboxylic acid ester, comprising the steps of: (A) preparing a mixture containing a trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)cyclopropane carboxylic acid ester; (B) oxidizing the mixture obtained in the step (A) to produce a mixture containing a crude product of the trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropane carboxylic acid ester; (C) contacting the mixture obtained in the step (B) with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal bisulfite to produce an alkali metal salt of a trans-2,2-dimethyl- 3-[(hydroxy)(sulfo)methyl]cyclopropane carboxylic acid ester; and (D) contacting the alkali metal salt obtained in the step (C) with a base or the like to produce the trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropane carboxylic acid ester.
