PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus and image display method which materialize a velocity modulation effect of a CRT television receiver by freely controlling a black width in achromatic color while maintaining image color edges of a digital image of a television receiver and a camera, etc. SOLUTION: The apparatus corrects the black width at the image edges of a received digital image to thereby materialize the velocity modulation effect and displays the image, wherein the correction of the black width at the image edges is characterized in that the velocity modulation effect is adaptively adjusted in accordance with color saturation intensity and black width correction is suppressed for color edges and the black width correction is not suppressed for achromatic edges.
