A silencer sub-assembly for a vacuum pump oil separator includes a baffle for intercepting an oil-carrying inlet gas stream to the separator, the baffle having a plurality of holes arranged to divide the gas stream into sub-streams, and each hole forming the entrance to a gas flow channel that directs a respective sub-stream into the separator. In a further aspect, a silencer sub-assembly operates on an oil-carrying inlet gas stream to a vacuum pump oil separator, and is retro-fittable to the separator.
