The invention provides a granular microbial formulation comprising a plurality of microorganisms that are capable of cell-to-cell self-aggregation without requiring a support material. The invention also provides a method of producing the formulation under aseptic conditions, the method comprising the steps of: (a) isolating a plurality of different microorganisms; (b) mixing the plurality of different microorganisms in a reactor; (c) feeding a liquid media into the reactor; (d) supplying the reactor with an oxygen-containing gas; (e) allowing a biomass of the plurality of different microorganisms to settle; (f) discharging and replacing a portion of the liquid media in the reactor; and (g) harvesting the granular microbial formulation for storage. The formulation may be used in the treatment of wastewater or other contaminated aqueous bodies.
