<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the most suitable procedure for braking processing at failure time in a permanent motor drive unit. <P>SOLUTION: An apparatus comprises a multi-phase inverter, a failure detector for indicating the detection of failure, a sensor offering a speed signal indicating the PM (performance monitor) motor whether its speed is larger than a transition speed, and a controller. The controller can be operated, in such a manner that an open-circuit response or a short-circuit response are applied to the multi-phase inverter. The open-circuit response is applied, when the failure is detected and further when the PM motor speed is larger than the transition speed. The short circuit response is applied, when the failure is detected and further when the PM motor speed is smaller than the transition speed.
