PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can prevent an urging means for applying a tension to a linear scale from being plastically deformed. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus is equipped with the linear scale 31, and a linear scale supporting mechanism. In this case, for the linear scale 31, patterns for detection are formed with an interval which has been set in advance. The linear scale supporting mechanism supports both ends of the linear scale 31 in order to stretch the linear scale 31 in the main scanning direction (lateral direction). Then, a rocking member 43 which supports one end of the linear scale 31 in the linear scale supporting mechanism is constituted to be rockable from a supporting state (b) for stretching the linear scale 31 in the main scanning direction to a rocking state (a), and is urged to the supporting state side by a torsion coil spring 45.
