PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in an image forming apparatus of a two-component system in which toner contains external additive, the external additive accumulates on an intermediate transfer member, leading to nonuniform resistance of the intermediate transfer member and hence an image defect. SOLUTION: In order to remove external additive firmly sticking to the surface of the intermediate transfer member, a cleaning mode is turned on. A cleaning means in the cleaning mode makes a difference between the speed at which paper is conveyed and the speed at which the intermediate transfer member is conveyed. Thereby the cleaning means causes slide friction between the intermediate transfer member and paper, thus scraping the external additive off the surface. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
