PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an on-screen part from becoming abnormally bright or on-screen display suddenly becoming bright. SOLUTION: An on-screen display level is adjusted to a higher target value as ambient light is brighter and adjusted to a lower target value as the ambient light is darker. According to a video signal level, an on-screen display level lower than a target value to be adjusted is decided as an initial value, and the on-screen display level is varied gradually from the initial value toward the target value to be adjusted.
