PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress increase of computational complexity, ensure the accuracy of distance measurement, and enlarge the range of distance measurement when processing stereoscopic images and measuring the distance of an object. SOLUTION: A stereoscopic image processing apparatus reduces, in half, the length and the width of an image of a short-range object B which overflows the search width w of the left and right ordinary images formed by a stereoscopic camera and makes the parallax search width of this reduced image equal to the search width w of an ordinary image to equivalently double the search width.Since the search width w is identical, the total computational complexity of this stereoscopic processing is one fourth of the total computational complexity of ordinary stereoscopic image processing and the computational complexity of stereoscopic processing can be suppressed to 1.25 times as much as the computational complexity for enabling measurement of distance from a long-range object to a short-range object B.
