PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an index capable of automatically discriminating a more correct. SOLUTION: When automatically discriminating the scene, a possibility for an assumed object that is a characteristic object to exist in the photographing scene is calculated beforehand for each photographing scene as scene reliability. For the scene reliability calculation, a digital camera previously stores color characteristics and luminance characteristics of the assumed object in each photographing scene as scene characteristics. When calculating the scene reliability, a preview image is divided into a plurality of blocks and a representative luminance value and a representative color value of each block are calculated as block characteristics.
