PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily maintain the uniformity of a development layer on a developing roll while assuring the uniformity of the conveyance property of the developer on the developing roll. SOLUTION: There are provided a developing housing 1 which houses a two-component developer G including a toner and carrier and the developing roll 2 which is disposed in the developing housing 1 and conveys the two-component developer G to a developing area. The developing roll 2 includes a developing sleeve 3 which is freely rotatably disposed and has rugged patterns 5 having regularity on its external surface, and a magnet member 4 which is disposed within the developing sleeve 3 and is arrayed with a prescribed number of magnetic poles. The rugged pattern 5 has convex blocks 6 consisting of regular shapes and hollow grooves 7 formed between the convex blocks 6. As shown in Fig. 1 (b), the depth of the hollow grooves 7 defined as h, the width as w, where n=w/h, are required to be 1≤n≤6, h to be less than 4 times as large as the carrier diameter and w to be≤500μm.
