<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device of a light valve or the like which hardly causes leakage light due to a polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: A compensation layer 85 is a flat plate element formed with a positive uniaxial refractive material such as crystal and exerts such an operation as to compensate a change of polarization state produced by birefringence of an inside support layer 84.
