PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent streaks of nonuniform density, resulting from such a situation as that before an image forming apparatus having a contact or an extremely close contact charging device is installed after shipment, for example, a charging roll and a photoreceptor are kept pressed against each other for a long time. SOLUTION: A cleaning member 106 whose one end is fixed to a base material part 101 is disposed in contact with the surface of the charging roll 14, thereby cleaning the surface. Further, the free end of the cleaning member 106 is wrapped along substantially a half of the circumference of a bending member 103, and then inserted between the charging roll 14 and an image carrier 12.
