PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device capable of preventing double feeding even for special sheet materials such as gross or coated paper. SOLUTION: This sheet conveying device comprises a control means for so rotatingly controlling a feed roller 4 and a retard roller 5 that, when multiple sheets are fed from a sheet loading device 1 and conveyed without being separated by the feed roller 4 and the retard roller 5, the feed roller 4 and the retard roller 5 are rotated in the direction that the sheets are conveyed toward the device body until the end of the sheets abuts on the nip part of a pair of conveying rollers 14 in a stationary state to form a first loop L1 on the feed roller 4 side relative to the sheet on the feed roller 4 side, and the sheet on the retard roller 5 side of the sheets is conveyed more than the sheet on the feed roller 4 side to form a second loop L2 relative to the sheet on the retard roller 5 side in the direction reverse to the first loop.
