PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion controller for an internal combustion engine capable of carrying out switching of combustion modes by properly suppressing a torque step while giving consideration to a retardation limit of ignition timing. SOLUTION: In the combustion controller for an internal combustion engine, control for preventing a torque step generatable during switching of combustion modes is carried out. In a retardation limit determining means, it is determined whether or not ignition timing after retardation will exceed the retardation limit. In a switching control means, control of switching of combustion modes, ignition timing, or the like is carried out on the basis of the retardation limit in the ignition timing, and an acceleration/deceleration state of the vehicle. To be specific, in the switching control means, if the ignition timing after retardation exceeds the retardation limit, a driver will hardly feel the torque step by carrying out control responding to the acceleration/deceleration state of the vehicle. By the combustion control for an internal combustion engine, if the ignition timing after retardation exceeds the retardation limit, a torque step to be felt by the driver an be effectively suppressed.
