<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument and method for conveniently performing rapid amplification of nucleic acids. <P>SOLUTION: The instrument 1 for the heating and cooling of an object by a controlled method contains a substantially flat temperature sensor element 4, a substantially flat and hard heat-conductive substrate 5, a substantially flat resistance heater, a substantially flat insulation layer and a cooling element 9.
