PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the fluctuation occurring in the impact due to a recording medium by preventing the transient negative load fluctuation generated at the timing of inrush or protrusion of the recording medium into or from a pressurizing part from being transmitted to a transfer section. SOLUTION: The image transfer device is equipped with a driving roller 4, and a transfer belt 7 spanned between the same and a driven roller 6, and is formed with the pressurizing part between the transfer belt 7 and a transfer roller 8, wherein the toner image is transferred from the transfer belt 7 on a paper sheet 9 passing through the pressurizing part. Further, the image transfer device is equipped with a paper contact sensor 11 which detects the contact of the paper sheet 9 with the transfer belt 7, and an actuator 13 and path changing roller 16 which change the conveyance path of the transfer belt 7 upstream of the pressurizing part in the conveyance direction of the transfer belt 7 upon receipt of the output of the paper contact sensor 11.
