A thrust bearing has a large diameter frusto-conical raceway comprising a relatively thin surface portion 72 of hard metal mounted on a lightweight metal portion 74 having a thickness and shape sufficient to resist deformation. The surface 72 is made up of a plurality of flanged rails 71 embedded in the light metal 74. Rolling elements may comprise a series of radially aligned tapered rollers 12 ... 15, Fig. 1, hollow-tapered rollers mounted on a spindle 57, Fig. 2, or a plurality of short rollers 58 mounted on a spindle 57, Fig. 3. The rollers are located in a cage 53, Fig. 11. The cage may be in sections which are resiliently joined by rubber 69<SP>1</SP> or springs 69, Fig. 17. Fig. 26 shows a double-row bearing comprising two runways 72, 72<SP>1</SP> between which are disposed cages 86, 87 containing rollers separated by an intermediate conical member 82.
