According to the invention, a whitening agent is added to the toothpaste, said whitening agent containing a photocatalyst which is in particular, in the form of nanoparticles. As a result, the whitening agent contained in the toothpaste can be activated by radiating the wave lengths with light in order to whiten the teeth and to lighten the undesired colour. Optionally, the toothpaste can also be used conventionally for cleaning and caring for the teeth, and without light radiation. Optionally, the toothpaste is used to simply clean the teeth or the contained whitening agent is activated by applying light in order to cosmetically whiten the teeth.
