The belt retractor (1) has a belt strap (4), pivotably supported at a frame (2) for holding a seat belt. The retractor comprises a reversible belt tightening unit with a motor (10), an irreversible belt tightening unit, a coupling mechanism with a coupling plate and a brake element for the coupling plate. The reversible belt tightening unit is coupled to belt strap over the coupling mechanism. The brake element is deactivated by activating the irreversible belt tightening.
