PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately cope with various kinds of vertical writing processing even when performing variable output.

SOLUTION: An image output device 10 includes: an output means 17 which performs the variable output of varying output contents per page; a vertical writing format information acquisition means 15b which acquires vertical writing format information 3 which specifies a format when performing the variable output by vertical writing; an encoding analysis means 15c which acquires and analyzes variable data 1 required for the variable output and recognizes an encoding classification of the variable data 1; and a character code conversion means 15d which replaces character code information of which the encoding classification doesn't correspond to the format specified by the acquired vertical writing format information 3, with character code information corresponding to the format.
